The Lost Art of Letter Writing

Counihan Gallery, 2006

This exhibition explored forms of communication from the past and present through a collection of glass time capsules. The exhibition was a chronological study of letter writing and followed the forms of letter writing through letters sent between members of my family over the generations. Sentimental and handwritten love letters between my Great Grandparents, Grandparents and Parents were contrasted with the quick, grammatically incorrect sms and emails of today. The exhibition also featured 'emoticons' and a work titled 'Lost in Translation' which aimed to show the loss of emotion in old fashioned and sentimental words when they were translated into abbreviated sms text. The centre piece, a 210 piece chandelier titled "Illuminated Manuscript", contained fragments of my Grandparents correspondence.

Capturing Memory

Master of Fine Arts folio

This body of work explored the concept of aromatic or 'Proustian' memories which are triggered by scent. Seven large scale metaphoric perfume bottles represented personal memories associated with the scent of gardenias, lemon, chlorine, coffee, panettone cake, roses and winter.
